July 29, 1943 (Thursday)

Following the normal rotation of going out on night patrol, every other night, JFK took PT 109 out into Blackett Strait, west of Kolombangara with a group of patrol boats. PT 109 was forced to return to base early due to an effective rudder before the rest of the group spotted, attacked, and apparently sunk a Japanese barge with gunfire (not torpedos).
