Dinner Dance
JFK and Jackie threw a dinner dance at the White House in honor of his sister Jean and husband Steve, who were relocating to New York City to be closer to the Kennedy family offices that administered the family’s fortunes. The guest list for dinner was close to one hundred, with the insiders taking their supper elsewhere before coming in for the dancing so as to relieve the burden for the White House staff.
After dinner, Jackie and her sister Lee marshaled the guests in the East Room to dance the twist, and much to the chagrin of JFK, personally tutored Robert McNamara, Averill Harriman, and Phil Graham through their gyrations. Washington Post publisher Graham tore a large rip in his dress trousers.
The party went on to after 4 a.m. when the band stopped playing. Jackie retired shortly beforehand and JFK, who had left for a spell around 2 a.m. for briefings from Berlin regarding the spy swap with the Soviet Union that was happening that evening involving U-2 pilot Gary Powers, stayed until 4:30.
